Buffy and crew looking up at the camera

Buffy The Vampire Slayer #25

Join me as I break down all the wild happenings in the new Buffyverse! Once this issue hit my pull list, I didn’t know it, but my life would be forever changed. Read on to see what’s been going on…

And I Do Mean Buffyverse

So, I’ve been loving this comic from the get-go. The fresh take on all the characters, updated timeline, incredible art, this has been a great ride so far, and I loved all the little nods to the fans of the show. But the last issue, and especially this one, have taken it to a whole new level. Oh by the way

SPOILERS

I’m gonna be talking about what’s been happening specifically, so beware if you haven’t read it yet.

Okay, so in the last issue, it was revealed on the last page that the original show universe is alive and well, and can be at least viewed from the current Buffy universe. This is pretty huge, and changes this from a reboot to an actual legitimate continuation of basically every Buffy book, comic, or any other adaptation that’s come out. So theoretically that’s all canon now, which is brilliant and good. I mean, it’s certainly not original if you look at comics as a whole, both Marvel and DC integrated their alternate universes long ago (and then un-integrated them, then re-integrated them, it’s a big mess frankly).

In this issue, number 25, we actually see characters cross back and forth between what I’ll call the Prime Buffy universe and the New one. Specifically, the characters from the New ‘verse foil the plans of the vampires putting together the Judge, so they arrive solidly in season 2 of the show. They proceed to fuck things up of course, but they all manage to not be seen by their counterparts, so theoretically no universe-destroying energy is going on. Lambert does a fantastic job juggling the Prime and New versions of all of these characters, and ultimately they all come home safe.

Oh The Judge? I just punched him into a million pieces, easy peasey

Other reveals abound though, as back in the New universe, Robin and Faith are confronted by none other than Principal Snyder… followed immediately by the Mayor! That’s right, everyone’s favorite season three villain exists in this universe as well, and is probably just as evil? We’ll have to see. The issue ends with the reveal that the universe we’ve been following the whole time is actually the one without shrimp! So freaking great, I was howling when I read that last page.

Not much to say about the writing that hasn’t been said already (by me), but just to reiterate this is a fantastic issue, and if you are a fan of the original show, you need to pick this series up from the beginning, it will be well worth it!
