The last chapter of this miniseries came out this week, expertly written by none other than Patton Oswalt and T.V. writer Jordan Blum! Read on to hear more about why this was in my pull list!
Synergy Through Vertical Integration
Marvel has their fingers in many pies at the moment. Now that they’ve expanded the MCU into T.V. as well as movies, there is going to be a non-stop slew of MCU content in the next few years, not to mention the “non-canonical” things like the M.O.D.O.K. cartoon that will be coming out soon! The creators of that, Blum and Oswalt, were asked by Marvel to write this miniseries, not necessarily as a tie-in, but just to get visibility of the character out there. Oswalt has been comics-adjacent for a number of years, most notably with several appearances in Marvel’s Agents Of Shield before it ran its course, and he’s a publicly vocal comic book fan. Blum is known probably most for his writing and producing work on American Dad!, but he also was a story editor for Community back in the day. So this book had some interesting credentials going in, and I think they pulled off a really cool story here!

The first word that comes to mind is EPIC. From page one of this issue, and pretty much for the whole series, the writing has portrayed the pure over-the-top craziness that Marvel is sometimes known for. The biggest compliment I can give this book is that I always heard every character’s voice in my head throughout the whole thing. It takes a deft hand to write a comic book that is extremely silly and melodramatic, that also has really funny moments, and pulls you into the emotions of the main character in such an engaging way.
The art is epic as well, and perfectly matches the frenetic pace and craziness of the story. It’s funny how the cartooniness of someone’s art can turn me off in one book, but completely make sense in another. If you haven’t picked this book up yet, maybe wait for the trade, but I definitely recommend reading this at some point. It’s also a great pickup for any young teens you may have or know who love comics, especially if they watch the show!
