Profile: Bryan Edward Hill

After a short break from posting, I’m returning with a profile of one of my favorite extant writers, Bryan Edward Hill. He has written both for film/TV and comics, as well as being a photographer, director, and even a producer of a few tracks. Join me as we dive into a fascinating modern creator of color!

Bryan Edward Hill

Writer, Photographer, Musician

I first read Hill’s work when he filled in on Detective Comics after Tynion left that book, and I was immediately struck by his narrative style. I was hopeful that he would continue on that book, but alas someone else took over (not a fan of the regular writer on that book since then). However, this triggered my brain to keep a look out for his work, and I’ve since read a bunch of his other stuff. He’s since worked on American Carnage, Batman & The Outsiders, and of course, the Buffy spinoff Angel. All of these are great books, and have been reviewed previously in this blog (check the tags to see those reviews!)

To really understand his work though, I would say check out his photography. That may sound strange, since one would think a lot more can be said through words, but once you’ve seen his photography, you get his aesthetic. His writing style is an expansion of this aesthetic, and certainly there’s a lot more of his writing to digest, but definitely look at his photographs to get what he’s doing.

In the world of the screen, he was a staff writer on Ash vs Evil Dead, as well as the Titans series. He also wrote the screen adaptation of the video game Just Cause 2. So he’s worn many hats! While the Outsiders series has been given the axe, it’s clear that Hill is always working on new projects and collaborations. You can find I think his latest webpage at https://www.owlandserpent.com/, and his Twitter account is @bryanedwardhill.
