Profile: David F. Walker

Welcome to the third in my series of profiles on comic creators of color. I’ll probably switch to some musicians tomorrow for balance, so stay tuned! As always, there are resources at the bottom of the post that you can donate to. Thanks for reading!

David F. Walker

Writer, Filmmaker, Publisher

Award-winning writer David Walker has been a bulwark of politics and social commentary in comics since he started. Not only are his Luke Cage and Power Man And Iron Fist comics action-packed and fun, but they don’t pull any punches when talking about the role and struggles of black men in society. He also wrote the Glyph award-winning Shaft in 2015, a retelling of the story of the iconic blaxploitation character from the ’70s.

Continuing in that vein, he also wrote the 2015 novel Shaft’s Revenge, which is apparently the first novel written about John Shaft in almost 40 years! He’s got a really interesting documentary called Macked, Hammered, Slaughtered and Shafted, which delves deep into the blaxploitation films that he loves, and his publication Badazz Mofo (also the name of his blog) is known as the resource for black films of the ’70s. He’s an adjunct professor at Portland State University, and has taught various subjects for various other institutions, mostly in the Pacific Northwest.

Currently, he’s working on the incredible Bitter Root, which combines elements of race, music, culture, monsters, zombies and feminism into a compelling gumbo that I would recommend to any comic readers, but especially horror fans. He’s also writing Naomi with Brian Michael Bendis, which takes place in the PNW, and is under the Wonder Comics imprint of DC.

I couldn’t find a Patreon, or anything like that, but you can visit his website here: https://davidfwalker.com/, which has information about any Kickstarter projects he creates, as well as his blog and current books he’s working on.
